Need a new brunch spot, or seeking some super salads? The new menu at Tiong Bahru Bakery at Raffles City is just the ticket, mama!

Already home to some of the most delectable baked goods on the island, Tiong Bahru Bakery has just taken things up a notch with a new hot food menu at its Raffles City location. Whether you love scrumptious breakfasts or need a new central spot for some superfoods goodness, this is major cause for celebration, mama. It’s available from 9am on weekends, too, which makes it a perfect spot to hit up early with the kids.

All the new editions are French classics reinvented with modern influences and Asian touches. My hands-down favourite was the decadent Chocolate Croissant Pain Perdu ($16), which showcases their award-winning, flaky croissants alongside chocolate cream, sea salt, balsamic pineapple and vanilla crème Anglaise. It teeters awfully close to extravagant but I like that it’s not overly sweet. It’s a great dish for sharing for you brunch lovers with a bit of a sweet tooth.

The other item to try if you swing by for brunch is the new Breakfast Pancake Burger ($18), which is basically a more creative breakfast fry-up (they’re also offering one of those). It’s a delicious explosion of sweet and savory – definitely the perfect hangover food – with New Zealand cage-free eggs (the brightest yolk I’ve ever seen!), a stack of fluffy pancakes, a homemade sausage patty, and crispy bacon strips. They’ve even thrown in crispy tater tots for good measure!

What I love most about the new menu items is that they’ve totally balanced out the sinful dishes with some truly wholesome and tasty superfoods that are hard to come by elsewhere. The Killer Kale Salad ($14), for instance, is one of the best I’ve had in Singapore – crunchy (thanks to two-textured farro grain) and tangy (courtesy of sesame & lemon-miso dressing), it’s altogether satisfying and a worthy lunch dish. I’m still dreaming of the cashew cream on the side. If you want something a bit heavier, go for the Chicken & Cauli Roast ($16), with charred cauliflower, hazelnut dukkah, fresh pomegranate and creamy tahini dressing.

Another winner is the Rainbow Rice Bowl ($16), which hops on the current rice bowl trend and zips to the heard of the class with a poached New Zealand egg (they know me so well), spicy housemade pineapple kimchi (SO yum), mixed sprouts and salsa verde. You’ve also got yummy purple potato crisps on the side (again, housemade) and can boost your superfood quotient even higher by adding salmon for $4. The kimchi gives it a wonderful kick and there’s a surprising (and pleasing) bit of spice that you wouldn’t expect from these mild-mannered bakery types.

Another vegetarian dish that I was slightly less enamored with was the Smoked Coco Club Sandwich ($15), which has replaced bacon with smoked chewy coconut “bacon” flakes served with marinated tofu, smashed avocado, and creamy cashew aioli. I love all those ingredients on their own, but something about the dish felt a little flabby and greasy. Nonetheless, I admire their chutzpah and have resolved to give the sandwich a second go.

In all there are 11 new hot items and four new salads to try. Some of the other popular new items are the Polenta Pop ($16) with cheesy, crusted polenta and another one of those delicious New Zealand eggs; Corn Chili Fritters ($16) with housemade chili jam and avocado salsa; and a totally inventive Ebiko Crab & Prawn Toastie ($19) for those who like a bit of seafood to start off their days.

The new hot food menu is only available at the Raffles City branch, served weekdays from 11am and on weekends from 9am.

Opening hours: Monday to Sunday, 8am to 10pm
