Sassy Mama Carlijn tries out the portable Mifold booster seat – read on to find out if it passes the test!

When Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced in January of this year that it is illegal for ride-hailing Uber and Grab cars to carry children shorter than 1.35m without a car seat or booster seat, this of course is a step in the right direction. Personally it meant that I had to look for viable travel solutions for my little ones as we depend on Grab, Uber and taxis (the latter are exempt from this rule by the way, as they are public service vehicles) to get from A to B in Singapore.

Upon attending an informative talk hosted by Elise Mawson, the Founder of Taxi Baby Singapore and the only certified child passenger travel safety technician in Singapore, my eyes were more open to the dangers of allowing my 4.5-year-old son to sit on my lap – even if we are both strapped into the seatbelt – let alone carry my 20-month-old in an Ergo baby carrier…

Elise woke me up with her terrifying car safety statistics (such as a recent report by KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Singapore which found that more than 50% of children in motor vehicle accidents who presented to the Emergency Department between 2012 and 2015 were not restrained at all) and addressed my concerns by introducing me to the Mifold Grab-and-Go Booster Seat.

This handy, portable, little booster seat is suitable for kids 4 years all the way up to 12. The Mifold straps the regular seat belt to my little one snugly against the upper thigh bone and away from his stomach to keep him safe should the unthinkable happen. I LOVE that it is small enough to fit inside  my handbag, my husband’s work bag and even my son’s little back pack – so no excuses! In comparison to the other booster seat I purchased (the Trunki BoostAPak) I don’t feel as though I am schlepping along unnecessary stuff as the Mifold is a tenth of the BoostAPak’s size. Its design really makes it the most ideal and safe travel option for our family as we do not have a car in Singapore and so are dependent on Ubers, Grab cars, taxis and public transportation. Whether we are in a five-minute car ride to school or embarking on a trip to the beach, my son and his Mifold are inseparable and my heart is at rest.
