What is Chingay?
The word “chingay” comes from Hokkien and refers to the art of costume and masquerade. Chingay parade started in 1973 as a part of Chinese New Year celebrations in a street parade along Jalan Besar. From 1977, Indian and Malay performers joined in the fun and today it’s evolved into an celebration of Singapore’s unique cultural diversity. Residents and international participants from every ethnic background join in the festivities.
Full of energy and colour, it’s a great opportunity to celebrate and educate our kids about the various cultures around us. With a spectacular display of floats, cultural performances and grand props, it’s a dazzling crowd-pleasing event.
Planning and preparation for each year’s parade takes up to 12 months, and it takes thousands of volunteers from all over Singapore to pull it off–it is truly a national community-wide event. There are even international performances from around Asia.
The theme of Chingay Parade 2024 is ‘Joy’, and what better way to bring joy than through the universal love language of Food? Chingay will bring the country together in a “Food Wonderland”: celebrating Family Joy, a place for families to eat together; Community Joy, a space for society to share their cultures and stories; and National Joy in celebrating Singapore’s achievements.
