This heat! It just calls for something cold and delicious to cool yourself and the kids down. That’s our excuse for eating ice cream and froyo (frozen yogurt) incessantly, anyway. Now you can have your cake and eat it, too, so to speak with these healthier ways to enjoy frozen desserts.
We all know that while froyo sounds healthier (and is lower in calories) than ice cream, it’s still often packed with sugar. We’ve lined up a new sugar-free soft serve gelato cafe, two gut-friendly froyo ideas for kids (one is completely refined sugar-free), and for those up for some DIY, check out our homemade kefir ice cream or vegan one-ingredient ‘nice’ cream for the ultimate healthy probiotic-rich kids’ treat!

Hailing from Taiwan, with outlets in Shanghai & Malaysia, Camaca at King Albert Park offers Singapore’s first ever capsule pod gelato and sorbet made with maltitol instead of refined sugar. Maltitol is a sugar alcohol that is less sweet compared to refined sugar and with only the calories plus unlike regular sugar it does not promote tooth decay. All of the gelato are handmade and individually stored in a custom-made capsules (that look like macarons) – apparently to seal in the flavours (which means no pre-tasting, sorry peeps!). The capsules are put into a special machine and out swirls soft-serve gelato in flavours ranging from Swiss Chocolate to Raspberry Mango, Coconut, Royal Earl Grey, Roasted Oolong and Yuzu ($5.80 per capsule).

If you can get your hands on some kefir grains and start culturing your own probiotic-rich kefir milk, this recipe for gut-friendly kefir ice cream is an easy way to get kids to eat their good bacteria!
Homemade Kefir Ice Cream Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup full fat fresh milk
- 2 cup frozen fruit (raspberries or/and mango are good) or 3 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 Tbsp honey (leave out if your kid is under 12 months)
- 1 tsp milk kefir grains
Directions
- First make your kefir by putting the milk kefir grains in the full-fat fresh (not UHT) milk. Cover the jar with a muslin cloth and ferment for 12 -24 hours on your counter top until the mixture has thickened like a yogurt (if you leave it too long it will separate into whey and curd – you can still use but better to make before this happens).
- Remove the milk kefir grains saving grains for next batch of kefir milk.
- Blend the fermented kefir milk with the other ingredients until smooth (taste for sweetness – it should be a little sweeter than normal as sweetness is reduced by freezing).
- Eat immediately for very soft serve ice cream or place mixture in pre-chilled container in freezer for a few hours and then re-blend to soften ice crystals and serve. These work great as ice pops too.

It’s a little bit silly doing a recipe for nice cream; to let the cat out of the bag (we won’t tell if you don’t) it’s just blended frozen banana! But it’s oh so delicious and creamy if you eat it as soon as it’s blended. You can store for later but it will freeze up and go hard if frozen for too long. Add in any flavours you like — raspberry, cocoa powder, a squeeze of lemon…go wild!
One Ingredient Nice Cream
Ripe Bananas
Directions
- Peel and chop bananas up (the riper they are the sweeter they will be). Freeze.
- Blended frozen bananas in a food processor (you’ll need to scrape the sides down regularly). You can add in extra ingredients here – coconut cream if you are having troubling blitzing, other fruit, peanut butter, cinnamon or go pure.
- Serve immediately for a soft creamy nice cream or pop in freezer for no more than an hour to make firmer.
