Looking for fun family board games or card games this holiday? Here are our faves – the kids will thank you!
With advent of video games, mobile apps and all things digital, ‘game night’ may not be a common theme in most homes these days! But with the rise of cool new board games, we say it’s time to bring that tradition back.
These aren’t your classics like UNO, Monopoly or Scrabble, mama… Some of these games require you to get gassy, step in ‘doodoo’ or even start licking whipped cream off your own face!
Check out our top picks of quirky board games and card games to try with the kids!

How to play:
1. Pick a judge from the group.
2. The judge will deal 7 red apple cards to each player.
3. The judge will flip the card at the top of the green apple deck and call out the adjective and each player will have to choose a red apple card from their own deck to best match the green apple card. Place it face down.
4. The judge will then mix all the chosen red apple cards together and decide which one is the best or the funniest.
5. The owner of the chosen card will have to identify themselves and will then be the judge for the next round.
6. First person to get 10 green cards wins!
Best for older kids, Apples to Apples is a game that promises hours of fun! You can even try getting your kids to play opposites by matching red apple cards that are the opposite of the adjective described in the green apple card. This game is totally hilarious and forces you to get creative and think on your feet. It’s super fun whether played with kids or with adults (think of it as a cleaner version of Cards Against Humanity)!

How to play:
Classic Cranium encourages you to “use your whole brain” via four different categories: Creative Cat (drawing and sculpting), Data Head (trivia), Star Performer (charades and name that tune), and Word Worm (word puzzles, spelling and definitions). Played in teams, the object is to successfully complete various activities before time runs out. The game is SO much fun and brings out everyone’s inner performer in a hilarious way. If your kiddos are on the younger side, there’s also Family Cranium (ages 8+) and Cranium Cadoo (6+), which incorporates some of the same categories with a tic-tac-toe setup.

How to play:
1. Little piles of compound (provided), moulded in the shape of poop have been strategically placed on the mat.
2. One player puts on a blindfold. Another player spins the spinner, and the blindfolded player has to take as many steps across the game mat as the number the spinner lands on.
3. Whoever avoids the poop till the end wins!
This game will be a hit with younger kids – as long as they’ve started walking, they can start playing! Great for parties. Make it even more interesting by playing in teams and allowing the other team members to direct the person playing so they don’t accidentally step on the poop.

How to play:
1. Each player gets 3 cards. You can choose to play a number card, or Reverse or Skip your turn.
2. Press Guster the Gas Cloud as many times as the number shown on your card. Once your turn ends, take a card from the deck.
3. If Guster farts, you’re out! Last man standing wins the game!
This really simple game goes by quickly so it’s great for playing in big groups. Kids and adults alike will be doubling over playing Gas Out, as the suspense is enough to make people nervous over whether Guster will fart during their turn! The sound he makes is hilarious so be sure you’re playing this in a space that won’t mind the noise – a mixture of farts and uncontrollable laughter!

This game may be a little messy, but it’s so worth seeing your kids’ faces light up when they come home with this on the table! It’s a popular game that has taken YouTube by storm, so chances are your kids have already seen it on a popular toy channel video already. Although the game play is really easy, it’s best played with some adult supervision (unless you don’t mind whipped cream all over your dining table, carpet or floor!).

Take turns having each player on each team be the one to hold the buzzer and keep track of “taboo” word use from the other team. When you hear the clue giver say one of the taboo words, you buzz them. Put the card into a discard pile for that round. Put skipped cards into the same discard pile.
Taboo is an all-time favourite party game that gets us super hyped! It’s a top pick at our Sassy Mama team gatherings and we once almost got ourselves kicked out for making too much noise for playing this – guilty! Families with older kids will have lots of fun playing Taboo. See how creative your kids get when describing words without using the taboo terms on the card!
There are 4 ‘sides’ to each card which means there are plenty of words to go through so you won’t get the same word twice even after playing a few rounds. There’s also a Singapore version with plenty of Singlish terms, monuments and local celebrities!
