Looking for a feline companion to join your family? Here’s all you need to know about cat adoption in Singapore, what to consider when adopting a cat, animal shelters in Singapore and where to adopt kittens.

There’s no arguing that cats make fantastic companions. The number of cat cafes in Singapore speaks volumes about how people can’t get enough of them! If you’re looking for a cat yourself, we’ve got the lowdown on everything you need to know about cat adoption in Singapore, including where to adopt kittens and animal shelters to check out.

It’s important to note that adopting a cat–let alone any pet–is a lifelong commitment. So be sure you can financially, physically, mentally and emotionally commit to pet ownership before you decide to adopt a cat.

First of all, congratulations on choosing to adopt! Not only are you saving a life, but you’re also helping to curb the overpopulation of stray cats in Singapore. Now, you might be wondering whether a cat or a kitten is more suitable for you. Here are some things to consider:

Adopting a kitten

Kittens tend to be the more popular choice for cat adoption in Singapore as families may want it to grow with them. If you’re looking to adopt one, you’ll need to know how to take care of kittens as they require more care compared to adult cats. Families with young kids should teach their kids to handle kittens gently, as their tiny bodies are more susceptible to injury.

Kittens also naturally have higher energy levels, which means they need plenty of playtime throughout the day. This also comes with lots of curiosity–so you’ll have to constantly supervise them as no household furniture is spared from climbing, scratching and running around! Most importantly, keep them away from household dangers such as toilet bowls, electrical sockets and household cleaners.

Adopting an adult cat

Ask any cat owner who’s adopted an adult cat and they’ll tell you that it’s every bit as wonderful as adopting a kitten! With an adult cat, you can get a better gauge of what its personality is like, whether it’s a lap cat, whether it’s good with kids and so forth. There may be a misconception that adult cats are set in their ways, but plenty of rescued cats are often rehabilitated; when exposed to a loving home, adult cats can eventually mimic the environment they are in!

We also can’t go without mentioning senior cats (11 years old and above), because these felines can be the best companions, too! Senior cats are usually calmer and may require more care health-wise, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be a loving pet. Plus, you’re essentially saving a life!

How to prepare for cat adoption in Singapore

As cat adoption is a lifelong commitment, you’ll notice that most of these cat adoption centres, shelters and boards ensure that potential adopters are suitable cat owners. Here’s what you need to know about preparing for cat adoption in Singapore:

1. Time and financial commitment

Before adopting a cat, you’ll have to ensure that you have the time and financial capability to own one. Make an assessment of your lifestyle, whether you’ll be travelling a lot, away from home for long hours, or whether you plan to grow your family further in the future. Cats don’t just need daily feeding, playing and cleaning of their litter boxes, but they also need human interaction in order to thrive.

Cats also require a mix of good-quality wet food and kibble. You will need to prepare a good food and water bowl for them (ceramic and stainless steel are recommended), as well as a cat litter box and plenty of cat litter. Be prepared to also bring your cat for annual veterinary visits, to keep them up-to-date on their vaccinations and ensure they are healthy.

2. Cat-proofing your home

Cats are naturally curious critters. It’s important to know that cats do not fear heights and WILL climb and jump from open windows if given the chance. That’s why many cat adoption centres in Singapore will only allow you to adopt a cat if your home is cat-proofed. Ensure your windows and balconies are securely meshed or grilled, so your cat cannot squeeze through them. Trust us when we say you are saving your cat’s life when you do this.

Your cat will also thrive in a home with sufficient cat trees, scratchers and toys. Besides giving them lots of avenues to play, this can also help deter them from scratching up your furniture. It is also strongly recommended to keep your cat fully indoors, as allowing them outdoors can expose them to diseases and fatal accidents.

P.S. Cats are now allowed in HDBs. Up to two cats and one dog (approved breed) are now allowed in HDBs, while up to three cats and/or dogs are allowed in private residences. From 1 September 2024 to 31 August 2026, existing cat owners need to license their cats during a transitional phase.
