How does LASIK work?
If you’re not too familiar with LASIK, it’s a type of eye surgery in which an eye surgeon creates a flap in the cornea, and then uses a laser to reshape the cornea and correct any other refractive errors in the eye – including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Consult this FDA guide for everything you can expect before, during and after LASIK eye surgery to get an overall idea before you consult a doctor with your own concerns. LASIK recovery periods will vary, depending on your overall health, but it typically takes between three and six months to fully heal.
Who can undergo LASIK eye surgery?
LASIK isn’t suitable for everyone. You must be above the age of 21, you should not be pregnant or have cataracts, glaucoma or retinal diseases. You will need to undergo a thorough eye examination with an ophthalmologist before you can undergo LASIK eye surgery. If you want to know about whether LASIK is right for you, risk factors, or side effects, check out our interview with Dr. Lee Hung Ming, who answers FAQs about everything related to LASIK, ranging from recovery time to average cost.
How much does LASIK cost in Singapore?
In general, LASIK is broken up into three areas: the pre-op consultation, the LASIK procedure itself and the post-op follow-up and medication. While prices for the assessment are generally affordable (from $100 and up), the price of the LASIK surgery itself doesn’t vary too widely between public and private hospitals. Some clinics may offer cheaper prices initially, but there could be hidden fees afterwards. In general, the overall costs of the assessment, corrective procedure and post-op follow-ups should range anywhere between $3,000 to $5,000 – this figure also depends on your body’s response to the procedure and if there are any side effects or complications. LASIK generally isn’t covered by insurance or by Medisave (unless it was done for urgent health reasons), but if you’re tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses, then you’ll certainly save on those costs for the rest of your life!
