We all want our kids to be happy; wouldn’t it be cool if there was a school that made happiness its biggest priority?

There are many components to a great education, but at the award-winning Global Indian International School (GIIS), they’ve cracked the code to recognize that happy and fulfilled students make for an all-around better educational experience for everyone – parents and teachers included!

The primary school programme at all the GIIS campuses emphasises a three-pronged approach to laying the foundations for a child’s formative years, focusing on physical, emotional and ethical growth. Academics are important, of course, but the pedagogy also includes plenty of value-added programmes to enhance the love of learning and curiosity amongst students in Grades 1-5.

What’s more, there’s a 60-40 split between academics, sports and co-curriculars, because GIIS recognises that it’s worth helping students find their passions, and then pursue them.

Value-added programmes that bring learning to life are the name of the game at GIIS. For instance, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), programmes are integrated throughout the curriculum, giving students a deeper understanding of each subject through exciting hands-on learning. From Grade 1 onwards, students also get access to HeyMath!, an online programme that makes learning mathematics fun and interactive. GIIS partnered with HeyMath! to help students hone their logical thinking and problem solving skills from an early age. GIIS also follows a Detailed Assessment model to help support and improve the academic performance of the students, and keep parents, teachers and other stakeholders aware of student’s progress.

GIIS is one school in Singapore which diligently takes on green initiatives, and students in the super active Eco-club lead the charge, spurring initiatives on reducing waste, encouraging food conservation, and composting throughout the school. Recycling and upcycling are also a big part of daily life; the more innovative and imaginative re-use students can find for waste, the better!

GIIS students also maintain an organic fruit and vegetable garden, and the school even distributes “Grow Kits” to encourage children of all ages to grow their own indoor plants at home. It’s no wonder that GIIS is among the most decorated schools in Singapore’s prestigious School Green Awards; they were even invited to participate in a special “Clean and Green Carnival” launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong himself!

While GIIS students receive detailed analysis and assessments to help support their academic performance, the school also provides an annual survey to both students and teachers to measure happiness and attitude, taking real action to ensure that levels are consistently high! This emphasis on happiness recently nabbed GIIS the “Making Quality Happen” best practices award in Mumbai India, as designated by India’s prestigious IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj Quality Award Trust.
