How do you choose a school for your little one? It is such a big decision and an important step in starting on the right path to education. Find out what the key priorities were for this mama and how she chose a preschool for her toddler.

Parent Name: Kawakami Nanami
Nationality: Japanese
Child Name and Age: Sarah Kawakami, 5 years old
School Location: Kiddiwinkie Schoolhouse @ The Grandstand, 200 Turf Club Road Level 5 (North Tower), Singapore 287994

How did you first hear about your school?
We were looking for a preschool in the area for our daughter.

What factors played into your decision to send your child to this school?
I was very attracted to the open atmosphere and concept in the school.

Did you take a tour of the school before making your decision? What were your first impressions?
Yes. The atmosphere in the school was open and all the children at the centre were playing very happily.

How did your child adjust to the school? Did the school take any special measures to help with the settling in process?
My daughter was very comfortable with the school when we went down for the school tour. During the school tour, the staff allowed my daughter to explore, mingle and play with her soon-to-be classmates. She quickly got used to it as everyone was very welcoming and friendly.

On the first day of school, I sat in class together with my daughter and I was able to see how she quickly got along with her classmates and teachers. She’s enjoyed going to school every day since.

What in your opinion are the three greatest strengths of the school?
Attention to children, how they promote each child’s curiosity, and consideration for each child’s health.

How does the school include parents in the community?
The school invites parents to participate in various events.

How does the school keep you informed about your child’s progress?
The homeroom teachers (English and Chinese) give us a detailed portfolio for each term which is very useful to know the growth of your child’s academic and physical education.

What is the number one thing you’d miss if you transferred your child to another school?
I’ll miss the school’s year-end concert that my child loved. She has taken part in it three times and I really appreciate that she has been able to experience it.

What kind of child (or family) would you say would be the best fit for this school?
A family who wants to expose their child to different experiences with curiosity. Children are able to have fun as they are always with their friends in a warm and nurturing environment.

What extra-curricular activities or out of school programmes does the school offer that you have taken part in?
The school has enrichment classes embedded into their curriculum such as FIITercise, Artsy Fingers, Dancing Toes and Tiny Tots. My daughter takes part in the programmes weekly and enjoys herself very much.
