Less memorising, more thinking

OWIS Nanyang

Ms. Rashmi Tourani, Head of Early Childhood and Primary School at OWIS Nanyang, firmly believes that inquiry-based learning, which is the cornerstone of the IB PYP, plays a crucial role in a child’s educational journey. Through the inquiry-based approach, students are encouraged to take an active role in the classroom, where they will be comfortable asking questions and exploring topics that truly interest them. Collaboration is encouraged, allowing students to share ideas with their peers and build essential skills in everyday lessons.

Recently, Grade 5 students at OWIS Nanyang took part in a creative tuning-in activity where they imagined themselves as early settlers on a newly discovered island. Their challenge was to build a thriving community that would be so appealing, that their teachers would want to move there too! The students presented their plans, leading to an engaging discussion on what makes a civilisation work, from farming to transportation and more.

With this approach, teachers focus on nurturing students’ curiosity, guiding them to explore how subjects connect to the real world rather than simply delivering information. Here, the teachers are trained to listen to students’ ideas and consider various perspectives, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Incorporating inquiry-based learning during a child’s early years lays the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. This approach nurtures their natural curiosity and encourages exploration, helping them develop essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
