Singapore American School is set to launch its landmark Kindergarten Chinese Immersion Program this August, mama. Come find out more at an upcoming Mandarin Coffee Morning!
Bilingual education is a huge draw of living in Singapore, but until recently, it seemed less of a focus at Singapore’s top international schools in contrast to the rigors of local primary and secondary schools. Singapore American School is changing all that with its innovative new Chinese Immersion Program set to launch at the Kindergarten level in August 2017, mama!
Come find out more at one of their upcoming informational Mandarin Coffee Mornings, happening this Thursday 13 April, and on Thursday 4 May.
Using a 75/25 immersion model (where 75% of instruction is done in Mandarin), the program aims to help students who are native English speakers at home become fluent while also gaining a deep understanding of Chinese language and culture, all the while building upon the foundation for continued academic success for which SAS is so renowned.
Specially-trained Kindergarten immersion teachers who are native Mandarin speakers have been working with the SAS Kindergarten team (in English) all year. English- and Mandarin-speaking teachers will continue to meet regularly to ensure teaching standards are always aligned.
And just what’s so great about being bilingual? Let us count the ways, mama…
- Research shows enhanced brain activity in language processing areas among people who are bilingual from a young age.
- Studies show mastering two languages helps bilingual children solve logic problems and multi-task more efficiently.
- Bilingual children have been show to be better than their monolingual peers at focusing on a task while tuning out distractions.
- Studies have shown that all foreign language learners develop on-average better listening skills than their monolingual peers.
This ground-breaking program will require a longterm commitment, with a curriculum designed to carry students through Grade 5 (when classes will be conducted 50/50 in English and Chinese). Beginning in August 2017, SAS will welcome 44 students into two full curriculum Chinese immersion Kindergarten classes. Each subsequent year, the program will grow to add additional grade levels.
Goals of the program including cultural competency, creativity, critical thinking, improved communication skills and character development that stems from cross-cultural understanding. Throw in Singapore American School’s world-class facilities, topnotch faculty and stellar academic reputation, and we’re sold, mama!
