Merci Marcel is that neighbourhood French café-restaurant that you wish would set up shop in your hood.

Luckily for TB hipsters, they chose Tiong Bahru, right beside Tiong Bahru Bakery. The interiors are gorgeous with the lighting just right, a mix of tropical chic with wicker and rattan chairs, exposed walls and a stunning mustard yellow mosaic tiling floor.

There are a few areas to park yourself in from the bright patio at the back to the main restaurant or the alfresco casual seating at the front. The food is largely French – charcuterie boards, lots of cheese (flown in from France weekly), Duck or Crab Rillettes ($18) and Croque Monsieur to go with the French wines that Merci Marcel stocks from independent winemakers of 80 exclusive wine estates from as little as $8 a glass! (You may recognise the wine list from O Batignolles as the owners are the same.)

On-trend dishes are on the menu too – from organic eggs for brunch to Chia seed infused yogurt with coconut milk, and fresh mango ($8) to superfood style salads of quinoa, beetroot, Feta cheese, pomegranate, and avocado ($17). From Ceviche of Red Snapper ($22) to the highly recommended Caesar salad of kale, grilled chicken, poached egg, croutons, and aged parmesan ($21) and the Australian Angus Beef 400g ($39), grilled medium rare with a tasty crusty caramelised exterior with creamy mushrooms, beef jus reduction and home cooked fries (the real deal fries no pre-made frozen frites here!).
