Good news mamas, another one of our fave resort chains has committed to a greener future! Alila Hotels & Resorts first piloted their Zero Waste to Landfill initiative in 2016 to four flagship properties in Bali: Alila Villas Uluwatu, Alila Ubud, Alila Manggis and Alila Seminyak. Fast forward to today, their zero waste journey has not stopped and they’re proud to announce they have zero contribution to the waste situation in Bali!
Plastics, glass, ceramics and metals are all reused, recycled or converted into crude oil so they can have a second life and serve the resorts in multiple ways. Each hotel has its own composting section and an organic garden, which uses compost made from organic waste to produce organic food for the kitchen. Alila also tries their best to get the community involved, by incentivising waste collection for local village residents and giving local school contributions in return. Here’s to greener travel in 2019, mama!
Released last week to coincide with the birthday of Singapore Zoo’s beloved polar bear Inuka (who passed away in 2018 at the ripe old age of 27), this new children’s book by veteran Straits Times journalist Alan John is a loving tribute to the first polar bear born in the tropics. Our own kiddo was enchanted by the beautiful illustrations and fun facts (for instance, Inuka’s favorite kind of “birthday cake” featured a combination of fruit ice and salmon heads!). As the Zoo has stated it will not bring in another polar bear out of concerns for how the animals fare in our hot and humid climate, Inuka will truly live on as a one-of-a-kind icon.
The One and Only Inuka is available online and at local bookstores for $14.95. Proceeds benefit the ST School Pocket Money Fund.
New year, new makeup? If you’re looking to refresh your vanity stash, Sephora’s entering the new year with some coveted launches (and a sale!). Complexion is one of the first steps to a flawless makeup look, and one of our fave products for that is concealer! The right concealer can help to hide dark circles, uneven skin tone, spots and blemishes. A cult fave is Tarte’s Shape Tape concealer, which hasn’t been available in Singapore for years – until now! Boasting over 25 shades, this super-blendable formula can also act as a highlighter or contour and helps to brighten, smoothen and give the skin a firmer, more lifted look.
Another coveted launch this month is from Fenty Beauty, Rihanna’s mega beauty brand that broke makeup frontiers in 2017 with its extensive foundation shade range. Their new Pro Filt’r Concealer is set to launch on 11 January with 50 shades, and is said to be ‘the cure’ for late nights and bad decisions (we can relate!).
Post-festive season, gift sets at Sephora are going at up to 70% off! Some of these glitzy multi-product bundles include full-sized items, making them absolute steals this time of year!
Uniqlo U’s Summer collection is coming! This time mamas will be treated to vibrant spring hues on bikinis and one-pieces, and special patterns on open collar shirts, shorts, and dresses. For the dads, this season’s crew neck T-shirts in soft fabrics and casual boxy silhouette will be perfect for casual coordination for summer. Selected items will go on pre-sale from 14 January.
